Description

Hand-coloured studio portrait of NX5318 Private (Pte) Rex Woodgate, 2/4 Battalion. A labourer from Merrylands, New South Wales, prior to enlistment he embarked from Sydney on 10 January 1940 for the Middle East. He was hospitalised in October 1940 and following convalescence he was transferred to 19 Australian Infantry Training Battalion which was then located at Beit Jirja, Palestine. In March 1941 he embarked for operations in Greece. In April 1941 Pte Woodgate was reported missing in action and was subsequently confirmed to be a prisoner of war in Germany. He was transferred to a number of internment camps and while at Stalag 357 in April 1945, the prisoners were marched around the countryside for a period of three weeks. During that time the column was attacked by air and Pte Woodgate was killed in action on 19 April 1945. He was aged 24 years.
