Studio portrait of 3724 Corporal (Cpl) Allen Frederick Leschen, 52nd Battalion. A salesman from Norwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment as a Private, he embarked with the 12th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion from Adelaide on 2 December 1915 aboard RMS Malwa for Suez. Two months after arrival he was transferred to the 52nd Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, during early June 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 1 June 1916. In mid August he was hospitalised with influenza which developed into pneumonia and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before he was able to rejoin his unit in mid May 1917. L Cpl Leschen was wounded in action on 11 June 1917 and was able to rejoin his unit five days later. He was promoted to Corporal on 19 June 1917. Between late July 1917 and early May 1918 he was hospitalised with illness on two occasions. Cpl Leschen was transferred to the 50th Battalion on 16 May 1918 and was allotted A to his regimental number. Cpl Leschen was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 7 July 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was aged 23 years.
