By 5 February 1942, when 453 Squadron withdrew from Singapore to Sumatra, only six Brewster Buffalo aircraft remained operational, the others having been damaged or destroyed. With no replacement aircraft available, 453 Squadron was disbanded. The Squadron was reformed in Drem, Scotland, on on 18 June 1942. The Buffalo aircraft in the background has a small white coloured boomerang 'nose art' painted on the right side of the fuselage.
