Description

An aerial view, taken over Bau Hang from a 9 Squadron helicopter, of Fire Support Base (FSB) Balmoral the morning after one of the two North Vietnamese Army (NVA) attacks on the 28th May, 1968. In the view are two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) of A Squadron, 3 Cavalry Regiment and one centurion tank of 2 Troop, C Squadron, 1 Armoured Regiment. In the top most left of the image are two Australian soldiers escorting wounded Vietnamese from the clearing. A tank, still in its 'night' position, is just visible at the top right, in front of some trees.
A machine gun had been positioned beind the top left hand bomb crater. The bomb craters were left by American bombers, and in one crater can be seen the bodies of some NVA casualties. Star pickets traverse the top left corner of the image, marking the Australians' defence perimeter, and tank tracks traversing the image from the perimeter into the clearing are visible, where the tank broke the perimter to chase NVA off the clearing during the battle. On the further right of the image, Australians tending a wounded NVA member are seen. Also visible are debris and items left by NVA troops such as kit and webbing. A heavy machine gun is visible in the low middle of the image.

FSB Balmoral is in Bien Hoa Province and 3RAR were deployed there are part of Operation Toan Thang I. The purple background colour and the triangle shapes are defects in the original colour slide.
