Description

An aerial view, taken from a 9 Squadron helicopter, of the large rock on which the headquarters company and the mortar platoon of 1 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), were landed from 9 Squadron helicopters on 24 April 1968. The 1RAR soldiers are in their working up, or training period, having just arrived in South Vietnam for the battalion's second tour of operations. Operation Blaxland was the second operation in the battalion's three week training period and was a reconnaissance-in-force in the Nui Dinh mountains, also known as the Nui Dinh massif, ten kilometres west of the task force base at Nui Dat.
