Maquette for 'The Anzacs' [Desert Mounted Corps Memorial]
Description
Light Horseman mounted on rearing horse, while NZ Mounted Rifleman is dismounting as his horse scrambles to its feet, created to commemorate the Australians and New Zealanders of the Desert Mounted Corps of the First World War. The maquette was made for the sculpture originally erected in Port Said, Egypt in 1932. The large memorial was destroyed during the Suez Crisis in 1956. The maquette was acquired by the Australian War Memorial in 1933, and cast in bronze in 1936 by EJ Gregory.
