Description
Informal group portrait including 1602 Private (Pte) Henry Haynes Matthews, 4th Battalion (front row, second from left). A butcher from Campsie, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Matthews embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Seang Choon on 11 February 1915. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was accidently wounded in the left foot which was subsequently amputated. He returned to Australia on 8 May 1916 and was medically discharged. Re-enlisting during the Second World War, he was medically unfit for overseas service and served as a Corporal in the 2nd Military District Accounts Office. On 7 January 1945, aged 51, he died of illness and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
