Collection relating to the Second World War service of QX28089 Signalman Cyril William ‘Bill’ Woff, 2/15 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia, at sea and Palestine, 1942-1946.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of 22 letters, one telegram, and one copy of a photograph relating to the Second World War service of Signalman Cyril William ‘Bill’ Woff. Twenty-one of the letters and the telegram were written by Signalman Woff to his family during his training in Australia and service with 2/15 Australian Infantry Battalion in Palestine. In his correspondence, Signalman Woff writes about receiving mail from home, news relating to mutual acquaintances, army culture, qualifying as a mortarman, route marches, embarkation, being seasick, receiving a Comforts Fund issue, life on board the ship, meeting family members, his arrival in Palestine, settling into a new camp, feeling ill, the weather, sending gifts, undergoing challenging training, seeing films, attending church, missing his family, food, being on guard duty, and arriving back in Australia. Signalman Woff also responds to news from home. One letter, dated 11 January 1946, was sent by the Repatriation Commission to Signalman Woff. This letter concerns the treatment of malaria subsequent to his war service. The copy of a photograph depicts Signalman Woff in his Australian Army uniform.
