Japanese dressing gown : Miss Margaret Elder
Girl's oyster coloured artificial silk dressing gown with a repeat embroidered pattern, in black, green, mauve, pink and gold The pattern shows flowers and shrubs, bamboo, rocks, mountains, swimming ducks and pairs of swallows. The gown has an open notched collar, long sleeves, a slanted welt pocket over each hip, self fabric tie belt, and centre front fastening of two pairs of rouleau flowers and knots. It is lined throughout with pink rayon twill. The collar, lapels, cuffs and pocket openings are decorated with multiple rows of top stitching.
This dressing gown was purchased in Japan by 2/42736 Signaller Robert George Elder while he was on leave. Elder served in Korea in 1955-1956 with the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. He sent it to Australia as a gift for his sister, Margaret.
