Collection related to the service of SX712 Private Colin Gardner
Informal outdoor group portrait of six soldiers with a sea mine on a beach in Egypt. The handwritten note on the reverse of the image reads “Sea mine washed up on beach in Egypt. Left to right standing: Mick Winnin. Spot Mummery, Brighteyes Thompson, Joe Winter, Blue Croxton. On mine: Sgt Jack Haggett, Killed in Action.” Spot Mummery is probably SX464 Private (Pte) George Albert Mummery from Solomontown, South Australia (served from 20 October 1939 until discharged on 24 July 1942). Blue Croxton is probably SX7382 Pte Thomas Benjamin Croxton from Moonta Mines, South Australia (served from 1 July 1940 until discharged on 30 July 1942). Sgt Jack Haggett is believed to be SX849 Sergeant (Sgt) John Henry Haggett from Naracoorte, South Australia (served from 20 October 1939 until killed in action in Libya on 18 May 1941). The other soldiers have not been further identified. This is one of a series of eleven images relating to the service of SX712 Private Colin Gardner. [See image P09736.004.]
