The handwritten note on the reverse of the image reads “Taken Colchester Barracks England 1940 L to R Pte C Doris, O H Cox H G Winkler S Patful.” Identified from left to right are: SX1144 Private (Pte) Charles Doris from Semaphore, South Australia (served from 27 November 1939 until discharged on 13 December 1944); SX1839 Pte Oscar Harry Cox from Laura, South Australia (served from 1 March 1940 until discharged on 28 August 1945); SX1888 Pte Henry George Winkler from Croydon Park, South Australia (served from 2 March 1940 until discharged on 7 September 1945); and SX83 Pte Stanley Albert Patfull from Clarence Gardens, South Australia (served from 20 October 1939 until killed in action at Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea on 27 August 1942 with the rank of Lance Corporal).
