Pattern 1882 bayonet frog modified to carry Pattern 1888 bayonet
Brown leather Pattern 1882 bayonet frog with loop to fit over belt and a front section with double stitched sides with slit to hold the bayonet in place. The front has been cut down, and a brown leather strap with brass buckle stitched to the upper edge to allow the frog to carry the later 1888 Pattern bayonet. The back is impressed '581 NSWG 8 96'. The two latter numerals refer to the date of issue of the frog, not to the date of manufacture.
The 1882 Pattern Valise Equipment replaced the 1870 pattern. It was used well into the 1890s and was in service for some years after the introduction of the 1888 Pattern equipment. Some parts, including bayonet frogs, underwent minor modifications to accommodate differences in the 1888 pattern equipment.
