Description

White buff leather other ranks pattern sword belt with brass universal union locket showing a Queen Victoria crown in the centre within a circle bearing the motto 'AUT PACE AUT BELLO . VICTORIA'. The belt folds back on the proper right side through two buff leather keepers to a brass buckle, which can be adjusted to change the length of the belt. The two lengths of the belt are joined by a brass ring on the proper left side, which also carries a brass sword hook and the shorter of the two sword slings. The longer sling has stitched loop which slides freely along the back section of the belt. Each sling has a brass buckle at the bottom, which can be adjusted for length, together with a rolled leather loop to hold the sword. The inside belt is impressed '3824', as well as a broad arrow symbol and? '61 0'.

History / Summary

This type of sword belt was worn in Victoria by mounted troops serving in the small permanent military force, as indicated by the brass universal union locket. Belts used by members of the volunteer forces carried a white metal union locket.
