Studio portrait of 4486 Private (Pte) Charles William Mercer, 18th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. A butcher prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 9 April 1916. Pte Mercer died of wounds in Belgium on 8 February 1919.
