Embroidered fabric souvenir from Egypt, 1915 made from a square of gold cotton sateen with a pink fringe. The colourful decorative embroidery is machine-chain stitched. In each corner is a red crescent and star design, representing the Egyptian flag. In the middle are pyramids, a sphinx, a palm tree, the Australian Blue Ensign, French tricolour and flowers. Above these features is embroidered 'SOUVENIR OF EGYPT 1915'. Below is handwritten in ink, WITH BEST LOVE TO OLIVE FROM TOM'.
Embroidered Souvenir of Egypt that was sent home in 1915 by Tom Black to his girlfriend Olive Small in Sydney, NSW. The relationship between Olive and Tom did not last however, and Olive married Frederick Spence Hargrave in 1920. Hargrave was a RAN veteran of the First World War. No information is known about Tom or his service.
