Walker, Richard George (Air Commodore, b.1914 - d.1986)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 3575 / O3501 Squadron Leader (later Air Commodore) Richard George Walker. Collection consists of an original handwritten letter sent from Walker to his grandmother Mrs J Barnett of Northcote, Victoria, dated 12 January 1945. He enquires about her health and comments on family happenings. He refers to an un-named island where he is stationed in the Pacific. There the pawpaws are plentiful, bananas are scarce and pounced on by the locals, and the fish have eluded his unit's cooking pot. He mentions that the RAAF have their own radio station, but because their location is more remote, they have not had any picture show viewing visits. Walker refers to an entertainment visit by Phillip Hargraves and party, and states that letters get through, but bemoans the delivery of parcels that seem to take forever. Also includes a small RAAF badge originally pinned to envelope flap.
Richard George Walker was born on 4 January 1914 in Mildura, Victoria. He enlisted with the RAAF on 9 March 1936 at Northcote, Victora. He rose to the rank of Air Commodore and left the service on 10 March 1972.
