Portrait of 3063 Private (Pte) Thomas Donovan, 25th Battalion. A farmer from Townsville, Qld, prior to enlistment, Pte Donovan embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Brisbane aboard HMAT Itonus on 30 December 1915. He later transferred to the 47th Battalion and was killed in action at Pozieres, France, on 4 August 1916, aged 24. He has no known grave and is commemmorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. A younger brother 25434 Gunner Robert Joseph Donovan, 1st Field Artillery Brigade, died of illness on 23 October 1918. Another brother, 3304 Pte John Donovan, briefly served overseas with the 25th Battalion before being returned to Australia as he was underage.
