Canvas letter bag : Captain Norman Scott MacMillan, 1st Machine Gun Squadron, AIF
Heavily stained natural canvas bag with 'NORMANS LETTERS 1914-1918' handwritten on the side in black ink.
Contained the First World War letters of Captain Norman Scott MacMillan. These letters are held by the Australian War Memorial (PR04824).
MacMillan was a farmer from Moree, New South Wales, when he was appointed second lieutenant to the 1st Light Horse Regiment on 27 August 1914. He was promoted to lieutenant on Gallipoli on 1 June 1915. On 6 August he was wounded in the ankle, thigh and shoulder during an attack on the Chessboard trenches. He was evacuated to England and rejoined his unit in late August 1916 at Moascar.
In March 1917, he transferred to the 4th Machine Gun Squadron, and shortly after was made captain. He joined the 1st Machine Gun Squadron in July 1918. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Australia and his appointment terminated on 2 September 1919. MacMillan served again during the Second World War with the 19th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps, in Queensland.
