Studio portrait of 2256 Private (Pte) Vernon John Whiteman, 55th Battalion. A labourer from Dalgety, NSW, Pte Whiteman embarked with the 5th Reinforcements, aboard HMAT Port Sydney (A15) on 4 September 1916. On 2 April 1917 Pte Whiteman was killed during the 55th Battalion's attack on the villages of Louverval and Doignies. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
