Pre-enlistment portrait from a newspaper of 1948 Private (Pte) James Redmond Gilbert, 2nd Battalion. A labourer from Melbourne, Vic, Pte Gilbert embarked on 10 April 1915 with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Reinforcements, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20). Pte Gilbert was wounded at Gallipoli on 8 August 1915 and later evacuated to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Cairo for treatment. Pte Gilbert died of wounds and empyema on 5 October 1915. He was buried at the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
