Informal portrait of 1879 Private (Pte) Frederick James Nichols, 30th Battalion, of Brunswick, Vic. A ship steward prior to enlisting on 20 July 1915, Pte Nichols embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) on 17 December 1915. Pte Nichols died of wounds on 2 December 1916, in Rouen, France. He was 23 years of age.
