Studio portrait of 5773 Private (Pte) Stanley Ebenezer Thoms. A joiner from Elsternwick, Victoria, Pte Thoms embarked with the 5th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) in November 1917 for gallantry in action, and later, a Bar to Military Medal in October 1918 for continuing his linesman duties while enduring heavy shelling and mustard gas bombardment on the front line at St Martin's Wood near Foucaucourt, France.
