History / Summary

This General Service Badge was the first one to incorporate the Crown of Queen Elizabeth II. The badge was worn by members of the Australian Army between 1954 and c 1972. Brass and gilded badges were replaced by the same pattern, in anodised aluminium, in 1960.

This pattern was replaced by the sixth pattern General Service badge which featured the Commonwealth Star in place of the crown and the single word 'AUSTRALIA' on the scroll. The new design was approved by the Military Board in 1969, and by the Monarch in 1972.
