Description

Collection relating to the Second World War experience of Miss Sonia Dimes, Queensland, Australia, 1943-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one letter [including envelope] and one note of currency relating to Miss Sonia Dimes. Miss Dimes, a civilian residing at Beerwah, Queensland, made friends with several American servicemen while on holiday at Caloundra during the Second World War. The letter was written by an American serviceman, Sergeant Walter Thomas Churchill, to Miss Dimes while he was serving in New Guinea. In his letter, dated 8 December 1943, Sergeant Churchill writes about previously having leave in Mackay, being in a quiet location, missing fresh fruit, and remembering the good times he had shared with the Dimes family. The currency note is a ten-cent note issued by the Government of Sarawak, Borneo. The note was sent by “David” [identity unknown] to Miss Dimes as a souvenir from Kuching, Borneo, in 1945.
