Formal portrait of 1351 Trooper (Tpr) Norman Dundonnell Mackenzie of Nowra, NSW, 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A grazier when he enlisted, Tpr Mackenzie embarked with the 10th Reinforcements at Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. Tpr Mackenzie brought all his own riding gear with him to war; his mount was a strong chestnut horse, bred at Terrara, NSW, near Nowra. While engaged in operations in Egypt, Tpr Mackenzie was wounded in action at Nabit on 17 September 1916. Having sustained a gunshot wound to the head, he was admitted to 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance, Bir el Mazar, but died of his wounds that same day. He was 24 years old.
