Description
A large group of men crowded in front of the Brewongle stand, Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). 'Country Volunteer Camp' is chalked on a board in front of them. In the background, high in the stands, are palliasses (straw-filled sacks) used as mattresses. In the foreground a man is seated on a palliasse with an issue of blankets. During the NSW General Strike (August to October 1917) non-union labour was authorised by the State Parliament and volunteers invited from the country to work on the docks, particularly to unload perishable goods. These labourers were housed in tents at Taronga Park and near the SCG for the duration of the strike, the SCG being known among the strikers as the 'Scabs Collecting Ground'.
