Studio portrait of QX10713 Lance Corporal (LCpl) John Alexander Henderson, 2/25th Battalion. A sugar mill employee, LCpl Henderson enlisted from Bauple, Qld, on 6 July 1940. Promoted Corporal (Cpl) he was killed in action on 19 June 1941 at Merdjayoun, Syria, when his unit went into action against the Vichy French. His company commander, QX6378 Captain Richard Harold Marson DSO, wrote the following in the Battalion War diary: "I would especially like to recommend that the dashing leadership and fearless example of QX10713 Cpl Henderson J. A. be recognized. He is believed to have been killed leading an attack on a machine gun post..." Cpl Henderson was awarded a posthumous Mention in Despatches (MID). He was aged 26 and left a wife and three children.
