Studio portrait of 1878 Private (Pte) Ernest Albert Atkinson, 48th Battalion. A farmer from Snowtown, SA, Pte Atkinson served in the Volunteer Rifleman Koppto Club, West Coast, before enlisting in the AIF on 21 February 1916. He embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements, 48th Battalion, aboard HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 13 July 1916. On 14 July 1917 Pte Atkinson was transferred to the 10th Battalion where his brother, Pte Frederick James Atkinson (later Lance Corporal), was also stationed. On Wednesday 18 April 1918 Pte Atkinson was killed by a shell at Hazebrouck, France. His brother, then L Cpl, Frederick Atkinson was with him at the time and notified their family of his burial at the Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France. L Cpl Frederick Atkinson was later killed in action in August 1918.
