Description

Studio portrait of 411639 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Frederick George Pike RAAF, 3 Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Flying Training School. LAC Pike enlisted in Sydney, NSW, on 24 May 1941. On 22 February 1942, LAC Pike as a Pupil Pilot, Instructor Pilot Sergeant (Sgt) Pitt RCAF and fellow Pupil Pilot 14236 LAC O J Nichols RAAF, took part in a target training exercise at Lake McGregor, Alberta, Canada. During their final descent the aircraft in suddenly lost altitude, crashing to the ground east of Calgary Municipal Airport. LAC Pike, LAC Nichols and Sgt Pike were all killed. A later investigation into the accident suggested that the occupants lost consciousness and subsequent control of the aircraft due to carbon monoxide poisoning. LAC Pike is buried in the Calgary (Burnsland) Cemetery, Canada.
