Studio portrait of 730 Private (Pte) Francis Matthew Cahill, 9th Depot Battalion. A bank clerk from Hawthorn, Vic (previously Stawell, Vic), Pte Cahill enlisted on 23 August 1915. He died of spinal meningitis and toxaemia at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, on 26 October 1915, aged 22. He was buried at Stawell (Pleasant Creek) Cemetery. Pte Cahill was one of four brothers who enlisted in the AIF. 2812 Pte Richard Cahill died of wounds in France on 24 July 1916. 717 Lieutenant (Lt) Thomas Cahill was killed in action in France on 30 August 1918. 3324 Lt Martin Cahill was awarded a Military Cross (MC) and returned to Australia in December 1918.
