Studio portrait of VX63714 Trooper (Tpr) Stanley Charles Arthur McLean, 2/6 Cavalry Commando Regiment. A native of Natymuk, Victoria, Tpr McLean served in the Middle East and was with his squadron bound for New Guinea when he was killed during a training session in the Atherton Tablelands on 11 September 1944. The official history of the Sixth Division Cavalry Commandos, "To the Green Field Beyond" by Shawn O'Leary, records the circumstances of his death on page 238: "The men were massed before four tables arranged in a straight line, which carried pistols, rifles, grenades, light machine guns, land mines, signal equipment and optical instruments. All detonating specimens purportedly had been rendered safe. After an hour and a half of instruction and discussion, the troops were invited to examine and handle the weapons. In the course of examination a hollow-charged rifle grenade fell from a table and exploded among the 100 men who were congregated. Trooper S. C. A. McLean was killed and 55 others wounded."
