Studio portrait of NX37243 Corporal (Cpl) Frank Tome, 2/1 Pioneer Battalion, of Glebe, NSW. Cpl Tome enlisted with his brother NX32742 Cpl Mark James Mellare Tome, of Ashford, NSW, on 18 June 1940. Cpl Frank Tome transferred to 2/30 Battalion and was taken prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. He became a member of A Force (Ramsay Force). Cpl Tome was one of hundreds of Australian and British prisoners of war selected to move from camps in Thailand to Japan aboard the Rakuyo Maru. With the rank of Sergeant, he died on 12 September 1944 when the Rakuyo Maru was sunk by a US submarine. His brother Mark was also taken POW of the Japanese whilst serving with 2/19 Battalion. He was also amongst those who died in the sinking of the Rakuyo Maru.
