The remains of a headstone, cut from slate from the surrounding hills, placed on the common grave of Staff Sergeant James Mitchell of Tenterfield, NSW who died of wounds on 17 August 1900; Trooper James Daniel Duff of Tringha, NSW, who was killed in action on 4 August 1900 at Elands River, Transvaal. The headstone was later replaced by four permanent grave markers.
