Studio portrait of QX21824 Private Douglas Herbert Middleton, 2/29 Battalion. A farm hand from Mundubbera, Qld, Pte Middleton enlisted on 22 July 1941. Pte Middleton initially performed Coastal Defence Duties at Fort Bribie, Qld, before embarking overseas to Johore in January 1942. In February 1942 he was wounded in action and admitted to the 13 Australian General Hospital, Malaya. Shortly after his admission, Pte Middleton was taken as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese. He was later assigned to F Force to work on the Burma-Thai Railway. During his captivity Pte Middleton contracted dysentery and died on 24 November 1943 in Burma (Myanmar). He is buried at the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar.
