Description
Photograph of Holt Tractors on rail flat cars, relating to the service of 1385 Private (Pte) John Henry Askew, 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron. Originally from Bundaberg Queensland, he embarked with 11th Reinforcements from Sydney, aboard HMAT Mashobra (A47) on 4 October 1915. Pte Askew spent the majority of his service in hospital. He survived the war and returned to Australia on 27 June 1919 and was discharged on 4 October 1919. The National Collection also holds his diary titled 'An Outline of the Eastern Front.'
