Arthur James Carfax- Foster (standing third form left) and crew of the auxiliary ketch S-115 ...
Arthur James Carfax- Foster (standing third form left) and crew of the auxiliary ketch S-115 Miena, Small Ships Section, United States Army Services of Supply, Southwest Pacific Area, probably at Gona. Carfax-Foster was born in England in 1899, and from 1916 to 1946 saw service with the armies of four countries; Britain, Greece, Australia and the USA. From 1943 to 1946 he was with the Small Ships Section, rising to ship's Master on the trawler S-57 Marjorie Jean and the Miena. During the Second World War more than 3000 Australians served in this unit. They were not inducted members of the US Army but civilians attached to the Army, who for many reasons, including age and disability, were barred from service in Australian forces. Australia also built and supplied thousands of vessels to the Small Ships Section.
