Studio portrait of 1793 Private (Pte) George Norman Slade, 2nd Pioneer Battalion. A striker from North Melbourne, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Slade embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Aeneas on 8 April 1916. Later, while serving in Belgium, he was killed in action on 21 October 1917 and buried near where he fell (See P10222.002). Following the Armistice his remains were exhumed and re-interred in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Belgium.
