Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX30312 Private John William Bates, prisoner of war, Second Australian Imperial Force, Singapore, 1942-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one diary of Private John William Bates, containing entries dated between March 1942 and May 1944. It covers the period of Private Bates’ time as a prisoner of war of the Japanese at Changi Prisoner of War camp, Singapore. In his diary, Private Bates writes about the quality and quantity of food, weekly routines, recreational activities, visiting friends, feeling hungry, thinking of home, hearing news of the war, having dysentery, losing weight, being ill in hospital with malaria, the Selerang Barracks incident, receiving Red Cross supplies, being on a working party, Christmas celebrations, receiving mail from home, and having weakening eyesight. This diary also contains notes dated between 1942 and 1945, including lists of rations, lists of casualties, copies of official orders, poetry, names and addresses of acquaintances, and a record of pay.
