Description

Informal portrait of two Australian prisoners of war (POW) dressed up as bookmakers at Stalag VIIIb POW camp , Lamsdorf, Germany. One man, second from left, is holding a "bookie's" bag and loud speaker horn. A hand painted sign advertising their firm "E Bull, Newman and Bagott," who promise "Prompt Payment and Civility" is nailed to the wall behind them. A similar partially obscured sign advertising the firm of " - and Emslie" and including the imprimatur of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club (VATC) is also nailed to the wall at far left. "Baggott" probably refers to NX24892 Gunner (Gnr) Lewis Gaston Bagot, the 2/3rd Field Regiment and "Emslie" to VX14741 Private (Pte) Francis Ernest Emslie, the 2/7th Battalion. Gnr Bagot and Pte Emslie were both captured on Crete in June, the other names cannot be verified.
