History / Summary

This relic is associated with the service of Peter Bruce Whitton of the Armoured Fighting Vehicle Detachment 55 Advanced Engineer Stores Squadron (which later became known as 55 Engineer Workshop and Park Squadron) of the Royal Australian Engineers, in South Vietnam.

Whitton was born in Sydney on 1 March 1946. He was called up for National Service in March 1967. Allotted the service number 2786849, he trained as a member of the Royal Australian Engineers, affectionately known as the 'ginger beers', a rhyming slang nickname of their title. Whitton was deployed to South Vietnam as a 'Nasho' between March 1968 and March 1969.

As he was about to return to Australia the then Lance Corporal Whitton souvenired this flag from his unit at Vung Tau, Phouc Tuy Province. Usually the flags that were flown at the unit compound were replaced from time to time due to heavy wear and tear and the old damaged ones such as this were destroyed. Whitton decided to bring the old flag home with him as a souvenir of his service.
