Outdoor portrait of NX58428 Corporal (Cpl) Harold Ramsay 'Cazie' Cazneaux, NX56937 Cpl Alfred (Keith) Cole and Jack May (unable to further identify), 9 Divisional Signals Company. A radio mechanic of Roseville, NSW, Cpl Cazneaux enlisted on 22 July 1940. He died at the siege of Tobruk on 14 September 1941, aged 21. A message the back of the photograph from Harold Pierce Cazneaux, a renowned Australian photographer and father of Harold Ramsay Cazneaux, reads 'Reproduction from post card of Sig A K Cole by Harold Cazneaux Father. Oct 28, 1941. In memory of my son Harold Ramsay. Cpl, aged 21 years & who died at Tobruk on Sep 14 1941 - who is shown here with his two pals. To Mrs A J Cole. For the rest of his life Keith Cole always had this photograph in his residence, telling family that his friend Harold Cazneaux had died in his arms. Harold Ramsay Cazneaux had completed a Marconi School of Wireless course in his teenage years and had a room of radio equipment at his family home. His nephew Richard Harold (Dick) Smith, born after Harold's death, developed an interest in radio and electronics following visits to Harold's radio room which remained set up with his equipment. Dick Smith went on to become an businessman (commencing with electronics), entrepreneur and aviator.
