Description

The family grave of George and Sophia Ellen Richens with commemoration of their son 2265 Private (Pte) Enoch Walter Richens, 7th Battalion. A railway porter from Nubba, NSW prior to enlistment, Pte Richens embarked with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Wandilla on 17 June 1915. After being evacuated from Gallipoli suffering from dysentery, he rejoined his unit on the Western Front where he was Mentioned in Despatches "for participation in a very successful raid on the enemy trenches on 30th September 1916." On 20 September 1917, aged 24, he was killed in action at Polygon Wood and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
