Description
Studio portrait of NX55454 Private (Pte) Charles Thomas Foster, 2/18 Battalion, of Tamworth NSW. Pte Foster enlisted on 28 June 1940 and was taken prisoner of war (POW) by the Japanese following the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Pte Foster was executed on 17 March 1942, four days before of his 23rd birthday. According to the unit history 'Against all odds: the history of the 2/18 Battalion AIF', Pte Foster was shot after being caught without an escort outside the wire surrounding the Selarang Barracks, Singapore. POWs would risk going outside the wire in order to search for food.
