Studio portrait of 2281 Private (Pte) James Pearce, 48th Battalion. A farmer from Port Pirie, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Pearce embarked with the 4th Reinforcements from Adelaide on HMAT Ballarat on 12 August 1916. Later promoted to Lance Corporal, he was killed in action in Belgium on 12 October 1917, aged 22. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.
