Description

Septimus, a shetland pony mascot, is lead at the front of the march of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), prior to embarkation for service in Korea. The 3RAR band, which is also at the head of the march, stayed together in Japan and Korea and the members did not convert to stretcher bearers as was commonly the case. Stretcher bearers were recruited from rifle companies whilst en route to Japan on the troopship SS Devonshire. Stretcher bearers remained armed and were integrated into patrols where appropriate.
