Studio portrait surmounted by reverse painted glass of 3471 Private (Pte) James Robert Brown, 49th Battalion. A storeman from Newmarket, Queensland, prior to enlistment, Pte Brown embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Ayrshire (A33) on 24 January 1917. During his service Pte Brown was allocated the service number 3471A. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 12 October 1917, aged 37. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The glass is painted with banners which include Pte Brown's service details and the words 'For King For Country'. At the base of the glass is a painting of of a troop transport ship. The description incorrectly states that Pte Brown embarked on HMAT Argyleshire [sic Argyllshire].
