Description
Studio portrait of 2936 Corporal (Cpl) Cecil Herbert Johnson MM, 32nd Battalion. A plumber from North Adelaide prior to enlistment, Cpl Johnson embarked with the rank of Private with the 6th Reinforcements from Adelaide on HMAT Aeneas on 11 April 1916. Whilst serving in France he was awarded the Military Medal. His citation reads in part "At Polygon Wood on 29/9/1917, Pte Johnson showed conspicuous courage and determination in the execution of his duty.....By his cheerfulness and courage he inspired all his comrades with confidence." Later promoted to Corporal he returned to Australia on 10 June 1919. Cpl Johnson is wearing his MM ribbon bar and three years service stripes on his right sleeve.
