Woven shoulder titles : Australian Womens Land Army
Length of brown polished cotton tape with red woven lettering, 'A.W.L.A.', spaced at 130 mm intervals along the tape. Each title is separated from the next one by a short red vertical bar, showing the user where they should be cut before application to the shoulder straps on the uniform dress.
The Australian Womens Land Army was formed in July 1942, with the aim of providing women to work in the agricultural sector so that men already employed there could be released for military service.
Women were issued with work uniforms, including overalls and shorts, but had a formal dress as well. The dress had shoulder straps, each of which carried a slide-on woven tape 'A.W.L.A.' title. The titles were issued in strips, like the example shown here, which were then cut and sewn together as required by the wearer.
