Midshipman's collar patch : Royal Australian Naval Reserve
Description
Maroon wool cloth collar patch, also known as a turn-back.
History / Summary
Worn on the jacket lapel by Military Branch (i.e. seaman's branch) midshipmen in the Royal Australian Naval Brigade (RANB) from 1917. In September 1920, the Brigade was renamed the Royal Australian Naval Reserve (RANR). Midshipmen continued to wear the same distinctive maroon turn-back, which distinguished then from midshipmen in the RAN, who wore a white turn-back.
When worn on the jacket the patch carried a double row of maroon gimp secured at the centre top by a gilded brass RANB button until 1920, then by an RAN button after that date.
