Studio portrait of SX9488 Private (Pte) Eric Leonard Montgomerie, 2/48 Battalion, from Wirrula, SA. Pte Montgomerie enlisted at Adelaide on 22nd July 1940, aged 21. Promoted Corporal, he was later killed in the Battle of El Alamein on 31 October 1942. The battalion lost 199 officers and men killed or wounded of the 292 engaged in the night attack.
